LT testing with Andy H. today. Pretty good go at it for being a bit out of shape. This is the time of year when I have the motivation, the lungs, but no power. My LT heart rate for the first half of 2006 will be set at 186 bpm. Retesting will be in May.

Base1, Week 4
This is a "rest week" with performance testing on Saturday. It is also the final week of Base1. Time to start fresh. Easy hours to achieve. There are only 7 hours of training this week. I should be able to get a gold star for finishing all of these. Hopefully I can role the training consistency into Base2.

Much Better
I rode with Danny B. today. Great ride. I started from my house and met him in Webster. Nothing fancy, just out to High Ridge and back. It is nice to ride with the same people consistently. I like seeing them improve over a period of weeks. Watching our average speeds increase. Seeing them drive it harder every week because they're getting better. Dan big ringed Marshall hill today.

Bad State Of Mind
I need consistency in my training. Repetitious activities keep me going. The knowledge of a future missed workout even though it hasn't happened yet bothers me. Today I planned on 3 hours and only did two. Not because I was tired, and not due to time constraints. I just stopped at two hours. How f'ing stupid is that.

Ran Out Of Time
So, the work trip to Springfield took a bit longer than anticipated. I didn't get home till ~10:30pm so riding didn't start till 11:00pm. I figured a short spin to keep my training rhythm would be better than nothing. There is no way I could have gotten in 3 hours today. Should have ridden before we left...

Base1, Week 3
This is the third week of Base1. I can already say that this week of training is going to be messed up. How messed up is the question. I'm suppose to do 13.5 hours in a SUPER holiday week that includes a one day work trip. Plan for the week is to minimize my losses.

Snow?
Yeah, so there wasn't any snow today. Who'd a thunk? I got in a nice ride on the trainer anyway. Kinda glad I didn't go outside cause it took a while for my legs to warm up.

Too Much
So I got in a nice ride today with Danny B. and Carl F. Carl had a route plotted out in is head that ultimately destroyed both him and Dan. We basically did a partial of the covered bridge ride backwards via Old Antonia. There was a 3 tier hill that got steeper and steeper at every level. I had never been that far off of the normal route before and may find myself looking for that one again. It wasn't quite as long as the three main climbs of the ride but it was much steeper.

I felt great today. Legs were solid. Got a late start (9:45pm) because of my kid's X-Mas show at her school and my wife went out shopping afterwards. Didn't finish until 12:15am.

Punishment
So today is the day to reconcile the training debt that I acquired over the past week. Nothing big just a tad longer than the scheduled 1.5 hours. I don't normally do "make up" days but in this case I think it was well deserved.
Here is some info on the trainer that I currently use for these wonderful indoor excursions.

It wasn't as bad as I thought it was going to be. I drank as much liquid as I could fit in my belly and I ate a little. After the fun ride on my trainer the basement had the stench of sweaty alcohol. Yummy.

First Day of Base1
Well, for me it is. The rest of you should have started yesterday. Oh well, already an hour behind. Just a wee increase on Friday and on Sunday and it should look good on my weekly total report... I just hate missing days. Especially when I was at Dave & Buster's drinking and playing games instead of training.

Sick
It was bound to happen with all of the temperature changes. I am finally sick. The only rule that I have about riding sick is as follows. If you can't control what comes out of your body and when then you shouldn't ride. Phlegm, snot, and sweat excluded.

Day Off?
Not today. I didn't ride yesterday cause well... Ummmm.... Yeah.... Plus there is a bike meeting tomorrow at the Trek Store STL so I can't ride then either. So tonight had to be the night. It marks the start of the final week of Prep. Next week we go BASE1. Also, I started my new job today. Wow. Huge difference.

Bad Day
Car wouldn't start so I had to bust a$$ on my bike from my house to the gas station in Fenton so I could meet up with the ride. About got into a fight with some pole smokers in a POS Ford Probe waving an aluminum baseball bat at Rock Creek and 30. Flat tire on my non MAXXIS that I didn't have time to change out last night. Was about hit by a stubby fat $hit Pot in his white work van down by the stables. The dude had the nerve to slam on his breaks and jump out of his van after I flipped him off for buzzing me and screaming out the window. Not good. I thought Bruce was gonna kick the guy's ass after he (Bruce) threw his bike on the ground. There were two positives though. Nice weather and I did win sprint for the Kirkwood sign on Marshall. What happened Dan?

Burrrrr
Pretty chilly today. Another trek from the Market Place to Maeystown. I never really get tired of this ride. Mostly because new people seem to cycle in and out every week. Keeps it interesting. Today we saw the extended return of Andy O'guin as well as a new comer to the ride Josh Carter. Never officially met Josh before. Seems like a pretty soft spoken fella and serious about his riding. He obviously could have killed any of us today, but he was quite reserved and stuck to the plan.

Another nice day
When will the nice weather end? Rode with Danny B, Joe Williams, and most of the Gateway team. Headed out past the stables in Fenton things really picked up. Before I new it there were only four of us left Dr. Mark, Dave C., Allen, and myself. The pace was much higher than I had anticipated and was not all that displeased with myself when Allen and I got gapped off after a turn into the wind. After the Gas station in High Ridge Danny B., Joe, and I split off from the group for an easy ride to about the end of Rock Creek Road.

Ouch
Easy ride out in the country today... Yeah right. I guess Chris Martel was late for something cause he killed us on the home stretch of the ride. Riding with someone like that makes you realize what is actually possible. It allows you to set new standards and goals for yourself and pushes you to a point where you may have never been before. Once you get there you don't want to go back cause it isn't the same. All I can say is SMOOTH.

Pirtle Here, Pirtle There, Pirtles Everywhere
So, generally team tactics aren't used during training rides... Today it was Team Pirtle (James, Luke, and Mark). We also had Stover, Coil, Brewer, and a feller from Velo. Nice ride from the Market Place in Columbia to Maeystown and back. The action heated up with about 15 miles to go. Fast pace off and on until a blazing finish to the parking lot. Way faster than I expected, but it felt good.

Lazy Lazy Lazy
Getting back on track is tough. Finally getting my stuff together for '06. The drunken binge weekends are officially over. Now I just have to get rid of all the Halloween candy. I have the materials for my '06 training plan together and should have a schedule completed to take me to Joe Martin in May by the end of the weekend. I will be riding Sunday 11/06/05 at 9am from the Market Place in Columbia Illinois. Chris B and Artsy Karl are supposed to be there. Maybe we’ll get more sleet…

Weekend Recap
Friday, I got out of work early picked up my dog and headed out to the farm. Plan was to get the field and corral ready for the cows as well as build up the burn pile for the Halloween hay ride in two weeks. Oh yeah and party with the fam-damily. My uncle always has a keg tapped for us as well as a nice assortment of hard liquor for shooting. Kinda got drunk Friday.
Saturday, ate some breakfast drank a sports drink and went to work with my cousins and Uncle. Started drinking at lunch with constant refills from my Aunt in the field while we worked. Drinking and working progressed until dinner where we played cards, drank beer, and finished off as much of the old booze as we could handle.
Sunday, finished work in field and corral, had lunch and drove home.
Long story short, mega guys weekend at the farm lots of work, lots of brew and lots of fun. Not good for training, but eveyone needs to unwind. Last mega drinking weekend before serious '06 training is the Halloween Hay Ride at the farm Oct. 29 and 30.

So, I'm on a new team for '06. I'll post the name of the new team/club after it has been finalized with USCF. With a lot of work from Chris Brewer and assistance from our staggering ten'ish members we are on our way. The first official team meeting was last night. Lets just say it ain't no Dent Wizard budget. Fortunately the shop is being most generous and we have a good group of guys. Our Cat 3 team should be pretty strong again.
